Selecting a Contractor for the Insurance Claim and Restoration Process

How do I handle the insurance claim filing process?

 

  • Call your insurance company as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the easier it becomes for the insurance company to deny your claim. In addition to notifying them, you will also need to prove the loss and make your home or property readily available for inspection.

 

  • Explain your loss in full detail, but stay factual. Tell your insurance company exactly what caused the damage, and let them know the extent of your loss.

 

  • Be present for the damage inspection. Walk through the damages and the cause with your insurance adjuster on-site. This way, you can answer any questions immediately and ensure that they know the full extent of your loss.

 

  • Stay in contact with your insurance claims adjuster. Be aware of your claim number, and your insurance adjuster’s contact information. Stay in regular contact and get the updates you need. Ask for a copy of the home inspection report as well.

 

  • Read your insurance policy thoroughly. Know the extent of your coverage to make sure you are getting everything your policy entails.

 

  • Document the process. As a precaution, take your own photos of the damages, keep detailed notes of all communication with your insurance company, and request a copy of all documents relating to your insurance claim.
