Knowing the facts about mold can save thousands of dollars in home or office restoration costs, as well as reduce health risks.
What is Mold?
Mold is a type of fungi and is found virtually everywhere, as it reproduces using tiny, invisible spores that drift through the air.
Where is mold typically found Indoors?
In most buildings, homes included, mold is frequently found in areas with recurrent contact with moisture: bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Walls, cabinets, shower and floor tiles, and even carpets are all common homes for mold.
If a plumbing issue, such as a water leak occurs, it is absolutely essential that it be addressed immediately, as negligence will often lead to a mold problem.
How Should Mold Be Addressed
It is a common misconception that bleach will kill mold. When bleach is applied to mold, it cleans it, but the mold does not disappear. An area affected by mold must be removed and replaced completely to get rid of the mold. The best thing to do when mold is encountered is to call a professional, even just for advice or a second opinion.
Does Homeowner's Insurance Cover Mold?
Homeowner's insurance typically only covers mold if it is caused by a "sudden and accidental water loss," but not always. It is not customary for mold to be covered by insurance at all, which is yet another reason plumbing or other issues that may lead to mold should be promptly addressed.
What Health Risks are Associated with Mold?
According to the Center for Disease Control, exposure to mold may cause the following symptoms:
Shortness of Breath
Mold Infections in the Lungs
A general health care provider should be consulted if these symptoms are experienced in conjunction with the presence of mold in the home or office.
